Muhammad Zeeshan speaks to Art Divvy’s creative director Zahra Khan about his art practice, his curatorial philosophy and his experience as a film star!

This is the twenty-third in a series of interviews with artists, art collectors, art educators, academics, art historians and curators of the Pakistani and South Asian Art worlds, by Foundation Art Divvy's Creative Director Zahra Khan.

Zeeshan is a critically acclaimed Visual Artist, Curator and Educator. His work has been exhibited globally in important institutions and art fairs. The exhibitions he curates are as provocative as they are evocative and focus upon honing local talent as well as challenging the viewer to participate in unconventional ways. He has conceptualized several residencies and been a mentor to their young participants. His curatorial opus is to empower sidelined talent with opportunities. On this basis, Zeeshan was selected as Curator for the Karachi Biennale 2019- Pakistan’s largest international contemporary art event. ⁣

Muhammad Zeeshan received his BFA in Miniature Painting in 2003 from the prestigious National College of Arts, Lahore, Pakistan. Alongside his visual arts practice, he currently serves as Adjunct Faculty at the Indus Valley School of Art and Architecture in Karachi, Pakistan. Zeeshan's work has been exhibited at Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University, Herbert F. Johnson Museum at Cornell University, Abbot Hall Art Gallery at Kendal, Pacific Asia Art Museum at Pasadena, Art Gallery of Mississauga, British Museum, Gemak/Gemeente Museum, Fukuoka Asian Art Museum and Metropolitan Museum at Tokyo. Zeeshan’s works are also a part of the permanent collection of British Museum, Fukuoka Asian Art Museum, Pacific Asia Art Museum at Pasadena and The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. Zeeshan is co-founder of the Kaifwala Foundation that has successfully orchestrated the Bunvat Festival, focussing on the performing arts, for the past three years. Zeeshan currently lives and works in Karachi, Pakistan.
