Somnath Jyotirlinga is first among the 12 Jyotirlingas. The temple is near the Arabian Sea at Prabhas Patan, Veraval, Gujarat.
A site of 2000 BC Indus valley Civilisation. The temple is very old. Here devotees used to come to bathe in the confluence of three rivers - Kapila,Hiran and Saraswati. Attacked, looted several times and renovated many times by the devotees .
The puranic legend about the temple is that once the moon God lost his lustre by the curse of Prajapati Daksh.He made a Shiva lingam here and worshipped Bhagwan Shiva. Pleased by his tapasya Bhagwan Shiva removed his curse and gave him a place on his forehead and became famous as Chandrashekhar. All gods requested Bhagwan Shiva to stay in Prabhas area and Bhagwan Shiva agreed to stay as jyotirlinga.
In the 18th century Maratha queen of Indore ,Ahilya Bai Holkar built a small temple near the old somnath temple. After independence the temple was reconstructed by the efforts of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and the work was completed in 1951. The temple is built in Chalukya style of architecture. Here Puja is done by pujaris only. Devotees only come for the Darshan.
The temple has two levels, pillared mandap, heavy carving on the ceiling,212 relief panels,15 feet high Shikhar on the garbha griha,8.2 metres tall Dwaja pole at the top, Gold plated decoration in the garbha griha. Shiva lingam and idols of Mata Parvati, Ganesh ji and Kartikeya ji.
There is a Banastambh to the Southern side of the temple, the arrow on the pillar is showing that there is no piece of land between the temple and South pole.
Other deities in the temple premises are Hanuman ji, Ganesh ji, Navdurga, Mata Annapurna, Kashi Vishwanath ji .
Here people also come for pitri puja. In the evening a light and sound show of one hour shows the history of the temple.
