The temple of Shree Shantadurga devi was originally at Keloshi. In Keloshi Shree Shantadurga Devi was known as Santeri devi and was worshipped by that name. Shree Shantadurga’s temple was built at Keloshi by an affluent merchant, Anu Shenai Mone.

With the advent of the Portuguese in Goa and the increasing missionary activities, the community was afraid for the safety of the temples and idols. Hence the families worshipping Shree Shantadurga and Shree Mangesh, on a moonless night, leaving their homes and hearths behind crossed over the Juari river with the images (murti) of the deities and the linga on their heads and shifted to the region under the rule of Muslim king Adilshaha. Via Dandi they reached the village Kavalem in Antruj village and chose a site with beautiful surroundings to install the image of Shree Shantadurga. It is indeed surprising that a new place could be found by the devotees for installation of Shree Shantadurga with exactly the same scenic beauty as available at Keloshi. The patron deity Shree Mangesh was installed in Priyol in Ponda Taluka. The place is now known as Mangeshi Antruj was too small a place to accommodate all the G.S.B.families who went there to escape the Portuguese harassment. They naturally dispersed in all directions but always regarded the temples as a link between them.

There is some confusion regarding the exact date of shifting of these deities to a new place. However, as per the Portuguese records the deities were shifted sometime between 14 January 1566 and 29 November 1566. Shortly after shifting, both the original temples got demolished. Now the plot on which the original temple of Shree Shantadurga stood at Keloshi is known as “Deoolbhata” and it is in the possession of the temple trust.

During those days, that part of Goa was ruled by a Muslim ruler, Adilshah and his representative for the area was a person called Sardesai, who belonged to the Saraswat community. This gave a sense of security to the community and patronage from the ruler for the temple.

There are no records with the Temple trusties to indicate the exact time when the temple was constructed at the current location [Kavlem]. However, the records available establish that the current structure of the temple was in existence between 1713 A.D. and 1738 A.D. During the 20th century, the structure of the temple underwent repairs from time to time for maintenance and renovation.

The temple complex is on the slope of the foothills of a mountain chain, surrounded by lush vegetation. There is a main temple and three smaller temples of other deities which have been built on three sides of the temple. The temple consists of a collection of pyramidal roofs with a dome. The pillars and floors are made of Kashmir stone. The temple has a huge tank, a Deep Jyoti Stambh and agrashalas (guest houses).

श्री शांतादुर्गा हे देवी आदिमाया दुर्गेचे रूप आहे. की एकदा भगवान शिव आणि भगवान विष्णू यांच्यात भयंकर युद्ध सुरू झाले. या युध्दामुळे संपूर्ण जग व्यथित झाले. म्हणून भगवान ब्रम्हदेवाने प्रार्थना केली आणि देवी आदिमाया दुर्गाला मध्यस्थी करून युद्ध थांबवण्याची विनंती केली. देवीने भगवान शिव आणि दुसऱ्या हाताने भगवान विष्णू यांच्यात समेट घडवून आणला. यामुळे युद्ध थांबले आणि जगात शांतता नांदली. आदिमाया दुर्गा देवीचे हे रूप, श्री शांतादुर्गा म्हणून ओळखले जाते. ही पार्श्वभूमी पाहता मंदिराच्या गर्भगृहात चार हात असलेल्या श्री शांतादुर्गेच्या सुंदर मुर्तीच्या दोन्ही बाजूला भगवान शिव आणि भगवान विष्णूच्या मूर्ती ही आहेत.



शांतादुर्गा मंदिर इतिहास
माँ शांतादुर्गेचे हे मंदिर शतकानुशतके जुने असून मातेची मूर्ती प्रथम केळोशी येथे स्थापन करण्यात आली होती, त्यानंतर जेव्हा तेथे पोर्तुगीजांचे अत्याचार वाढू लागले तेव्हा शांतादुर्गा आणि श्री मंगेश यांची पूजा करणारी कुटुंबे आपल्या पूजकांच्या मूर्ती घेऊन एका चांदण्या रात्री तेथून निघून गेली. आणि कवळे येथे जाऊन मंगेशी गावात पोहोचली. कवळे येथ शांतादुर्गाची तर मंगेशीत श्री मंगेशची मूर्ती बसवण्यात आली. पोर्तुगीज रेकॉर्डनुसार, या पुतळ्यांचे हस्तांतरण 14 जानेवारी, 1566 ते 29 नोव्हेंबर, 1566 दरम्यान झाले.

 

शांतादुर्गा मंदिर रचना Shantadurga Temple Structure

शांतादुर्गा मंदिर हे इंडो आणि पोर्तुगीज वास्तुकलेचे संयोजन आहे. गोव्यातील इतर मंदिरांप्रमाणे हे मंदिर पिरॅमिडल शिकारा, रोमन कमानदार खिडक्या आणि सर्व बाजूंनी बलस्ट्रेड्सने वेढलेल्या सपाट घुमटाच्या स्वरूपात बांधले आहे. शांतादुर्गा मंदिरात वापरण्यात आलेल्या लाल, पिवळ्या, मरून, पीच आणि पांढर्‍या रंगांव्यतिरिक्त झुंबर, गेट पोस्ट, घुमटाकार सपाट घुमट मंदिराच्या सौंदर्यात आणखी भर घालतात. मंदिरातील दीपस्तंभ भाविकांच्या आकर्षणाचा केंद्रबिंदू आहे. मुख्य मंदिराजवळ डाव्या बाजूला नारायणाचे मंदिर आहे, त्यातही गणपतीची मूर्ती आहे.
