Executive summary: Paul Westerhoff has taken our i4i workshop along with his teams four times. He describes the impact it has had on his team's NSF center grants, his R&D, and on new faculty and students. I ask him how much we could improve our value from R&D if we did just three things: 1) focus on important unmet needs, 2) use a shared language for value creation (i.e., NABC value propositions), and 3) hold recurring team Value Creation Forums? A lot.

Carlson was CEO of SRI International from 1998 to 2014 and is now CEO of Practice of Innovation, LLC and a professor at Northeastern University and Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI). Before Carlson, SRI had previously been in decline for over 20 years and was nearly bankrupt. After Carlson became CEO, the company grew over 3 times and created with its partners a series of world-changing innovations, such as HDTV and Siri (now on the iPhone). His teams have won two Emmys and he has been awarded four honorary degrees. He was a member of President Obama's National Advisory Council for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, the NSF Engineering Advisory Board, and the Singaporean NRF Scientific Advisory Board. Carlson and Polizzotto's value creation method (i4i) is being used by companies, universities, and government agencies around the world.
