Fehmarn (Danish: Femern):
Is a German island in the Baltic Sea and the third largest island in Germany after Rügen and Usedom. During the division of Germany, Fehmarn was the largest island in the Federal Republic (West Germany). It belongs to the district of Ostholstein in Schleswig-Holstein. On January 1, 2003, the town of Fehmarn was formed by the merger of the four remaining municipalities of the island of Burg, Bannesdorf, Landkirchen and Westfehmarn, which had been in existence since January 1, 1978. The main town and administrative center is Burg auf Fehmarn. The island is characterized by agriculture and tourism.
