Sundara Gopalam, a Kathak Vandana from Pandit Birju Maharaj’s Chhand Kavya in raga Bhupali. This Indian classical dance piece is performed in Teentaal (Madhya laya) by Sunil Sunkara and Gauri Pardhi who have adapted Birju Maharaj’s original choreography while retaining its traditional aspects. The music for the dance is in the voice of Birju Maharaj himself singing the Nandkumar Astakam that describes Lord Krishna as the one who slays demons and destroys evil. The dancers describe Krishna’s beautiful eyes, his curly locks of hair, his crown, his playful ways in Vrindavan and with his lover Radha, his lifting of the Govardhana mountain. This is followed by the traditional Paran Amad that brings together the Bols of the Pakhwaj and Bols of the Nritta. The dance ends with a celebration of Krishna devotees.
