In this Satsang, in continuation of the previous two Satsangs, Swamiji gives a beautiful synopsis of the Bhagavad Gita (chapters 12-18). The talk gives the listener a bird’s eye view of the Bhagavad Gita.
The Jnana and Bhakti path - Those who follow the devotional path, they pursue devotion incessantly, with their hearts and mind infused in the Lord. Having the note of attention and attunement, they are united with the Lord. Others, who are given to contemplation on the Self also attain the Supreme, provided they have regulated the senses, have an equal vision, and are interested in the welfare of all beings.
Virtues that constitute true wisdom - Sri Krishna enumerates the virtues (13.08—13.12) that constitute spiritual knowledge. He categorically states that the twenty qualities are Jnana (wisdom), and all else is ignorance. A seeker must strive to become a repository of these virtues.
The three Gunas- A human being is always inevitably under the influence of the three gunas (sattva, rajas and tamas). Despite the binding effects of the gunas, they can be transcended and one can become a gunatita. A gunatita is one who allow the gunas to work in him, without resenting them or yearning for the subsidence of one of them. He remains unaffected, unruffled by them.
Attaining the supreme abode - Sri Krishna says that true spiritual pursuit is removing all undesirable elements from the personality, like delusional clinging, pride, delusion, desires. Being free of them, one who is constantly given to the thought of the Supreme, and who has transcended the hold of
sukha and duhkha, he overcomes all his delusions and attains the eternal abode.
What is hell? - There are three kinds of hell which lead one to destruction. They are passion, anger, and greed. Sri Krishna urges one to forsake these.
Saatvika food and Austerity - Saatvika food promotes long life, purity, strength, comfort, and happiness. Food that is tasty, soft, sustaining and pleasing to the heart, is dear to the saatvika people.
Cheerfulness, calmness and placidity of the mind, gentleness, silence, and purity are known to constitute mental austerity.
Renunciation - Any activity which is performed with no delusional clinging or expectation of a specific outcome is true renunciation. Real renunciation is the renunciation of the adverse qualities and factors of the mind. The result of an action may be desirable, undesirable or a mix of the two. The seeker must accept everything equally.
Activities - All activities must be performed in an excellent manner, without any clinging, being free of desire or hatred, without the expectation of a particular result. One must work with resolve, enthusiasm, and perseverance, being equal to the success or failure of the action.
True devotion - God is the source and designer of all activities. The entire world is pervaded by the Lord. How to worship this all-pervading Lord? The devotee/seeker must offer all activities to Him. God is seated in the heart of all creatures, operating the whole personality. One must take refuge in Him and offer all the attitudes, emotions, feelings, responses etc. to Him. By doing all activities, completely relying on Him, anchored in Him, one will attain the eternal abode. The formula is to wholesomely rely on the Lord.
Supreme Reliance - With the mind completely given to the Lord, with one-pointed devotion, one must do everything as an offering to the Supreme Lord. Dropping all do’s and dont’s, one must seek refuge in the Lord alone. Such a devotee attains the supreme and is free of all grief.
Swamiji exhorts all listeners to drop the thought of many and foster the thought of one. When the mind is free of all plural thoughts and is focused on the thought of the supreme, it is liberated.
