Rudolf Höss, despite overseeing the killings of an estimated 1.1 million people, portrayed himself as a family man. His wife, Hedwig, tended to a beautiful garden while their children played in idyllic scenes at their villa near Krakow. However, this peaceful facade concealed the grim reality of Auschwitz, where unimaginable atrocities unfolded just beyond their walls.

Unlike other Holocaust films that explicitly depict the horrors, “The Zone of Interest” relies on suggestion, emphasizing the broader question of human nature and our capacity for violence. It underscores the chilling concept of “the banality of evil,” as described by philosopher Hannah Arendt during the trial of Adolf Eichmann, the architect of the Holocaust. The film aims to resonate with contemporary audiences, reminding us of our shared humanity and the potential for darkness within us all.

The Zone of Interest is a 2023 historical drama film written and directed by Jonathan Glazer, co-produced between the United Kingdom and Poland. The story is loosely based on the 2014 novel by Martin Amis, itself based partially on real events. It stars Christian Friedel and Sandra Hüller as Nazi commandant Rudolf Höss and his wife Hedwig, who live with their family in a home in the "Zone of Interest" next to the Auschwitz concentration camp.[3]

The Zone of Interest premiered at the 76th Cannes Film Festival on 19 May 2023 to critical acclaim with praise towards Glazer's direction and script, the minimal use of music, the cinematography and the sound design, in how it tells the story, and how it creates a disturbing atmosphere. It won the Grand Prix and FIPRESCI Prize and was named one of the top five international films of 2023 by the National Board of Review. It won three BAFTAs, including Best Film Not in the English Language,[7] and was nominated for three Golden Globe Awards. At the 96th Academy Awards, it received five nominations (including Best Picture), winning two for Best International Feature (the first for a non-English British film) and Best Sound.[8]
