Overloaded with Gear on the Way to a Gold Mine!
started as a simple plan: hike out to a remote hillside gold mine and do a bit of serious prospecting. I had my gear, I had the location mapped, and I was ready to uncover some gold-rich ground. But there was just one problem... I brought WAY too much gear.
This video captures the reality of what it’s like to head deep into the hills carrying everything but the kitchen sink. I packed up shovels, classifiers, pans, a metal detector, food, water, safety gear — all the essentials... and then some. The idea was to be ready for anything the mountain threw at me. What I wasn’t ready for was how tough the hike would be with all that weight on my back.
As I started the trek toward the mine site, the excitement was real. This wasn’t just any hillside — this was a spot with serious gold potential, the kind of area old-timers used to work, now forgotten and hidden in rugged terrain. But pretty soon into the hike, the trail got steeper, the sun got hotter, and that overly-packed bag started feeling like a bad idea.
You’ll see it all in this short video — the struggle, the gear overload, the determination to reach the site no matter what. I tried to laugh through it, but man… it was brutal. It’s one of those moments where you question every single item you thought was “essential.” By the time I was halfway there, I had already mentally redesigned my pack list for next time.
This wasn’t just about making it to the mine — it was about pushing through, learning from mistakes, and keeping the adventure going no matter how rough the trail got. And that’s what prospecting is really about. Sometimes it’s not glamorous. Sometimes there’s no gold at the end of the trail. But every trip teaches you something new, and that’s part of the treasure too.
Whether you’re into gold prospecting, hiking adventures, survival gear setups, or just enjoy watching someone drag themselves up a mountain with way too much equipment — this video’s got something for you.
I’m sharing this because I know I’m not the only one who’s made this mistake. If you’ve ever brought way too much gear out into the wild, let me know in the comments! I’d love to hear your “overpacked” stories or your tips for packing smarter, not heavier. I’m learning every trip, and your advice could help out a lot of fellow prospectors too.
And hey — if you enjoy real, raw outdoor adventures, where things don’t always go according to plan but the grind never stops, hit that subscribe button. I’ve got more hikes, drone flights, creek digs, and (hopefully) gold discoveries coming soon. I keep it honest, unfiltered, and all about the journey.
This one might not have ended with a big nugget, but it definitely added some muscle, some humility, and a few ideas on how to improve for next time. And who knows — maybe next time I’ll actually make it to the mine with energy left to dig.
Thanks for watching, and I hope you get a laugh (or at least a "yep, been there!") from this one. Prospecting isn’t just about gold — it’s about the grind, the grit, and the good times along the way. Stay safe, pack light, and keep chasing that next big find!
Leave a like if this gave you flashbacks of your own overpacked adventures, and don’t forget to comment with your best (or worst) packing fails. I’ll be reading every one!
