Ted Joans (1928 – 2003), an enigmatic and captivating figure in the realm of Beat poetry and surrealism, was a friend of mine for the last fifteen years of his life. In 1995, while I was a professor at San Diego State University, Ted came to visit me with his partner, Laura Corsiglia. Here he is in my class, discussing his life as a poet with our students. Enjoy Ted’s, “The Sermon”, a serious yet humorous how-to guide for young women written before the pill was invented and abortion was (is) illegal in America. It is featured in his book, Teducation, published in 1999 by Coffeehouse Press.
