Established in 1960, the Hindustan Machine Tools Ltd. produced an assembly of wrist watches based on 100% imported components. A decade later this dependence on foreign components got substantially reduced through in digenisation. There were sixteen varieties of watches manufactured by the HMT, Bangalore. With two units in Bangalore & one in Srinagar set up at a cost of Rs.4.7 million with a capacity of 2 lakh watches p.a.,HMT was expected to produce 1 million watches against the prevailing demand of 5 million watches per year.The turnover of the three units in 1975-76 exceeded Rs.13 cr.
