EASY Maharashtrian Style Fish Curry Recipe | How to make Fish Curry | Shetka Fish Curry Recipe


Shetka (Silver Bream) fish curry is a much-loved dish along the coastal regions of Maharashtra, particularly in Ratnagiri and Malvan.

This spicy and flavorful curry is made with Shetka fish, a moderate to large freshwater variety native to the Western Ghats. The dish is characterized by its thick texture and rich, creamy flavor from the use of coconut. Marinated in turmeric and salt, the fish is then added to the curry and slow-cooked to perfection. Served with steamed rice or chapati, this quintessential coastal dish is garnished with fresh coriander leaves and is a staple of the region with endless variations.

So here's the recipe from my kitchen to yours

Ingredients :

4 nos. Silver Bream Fish (Shetka Fish) - can take any fish of your choice

Marination :

½ tsp Turmeric Powder
½ tsp Salt


For soaking Kokum :

6 thin pieces Kokum (washed well before use)
50 ml Water

Other Ingredients :

2 tbsp Vegetable Oil
½ cup (45 gms) Dry Coconut (Copra) - sliced
1 medium size (75 gms) Onion - sliced
15 nos (15 gms) Garlic
1 inch (10 gms) Ginger - roughly chopped
A small piece Stone Flower (dagad phool)
1 tbsp Coriander Seeds (sabut dhania)
½ tsp Cumin Seeds (jeera)
½ tsp Fennel Seeds (saunf)
3 nos Green Chillies
1 medium size (75 gms) Tomatoes (roughly chopped)
A handful Coriander Leaves
100 ml (in total) Water (add little by little while grinding)
2 tbsp Vegetable Oil
½ tsp Turmeric Powder
1.5 tbsp Kashmiri Chilli Powder
300 ml Water (use after rinsing the blender jar)
½ tsp Salt (or as per taste)
½ tsp Garam Masala Powder
Chopped Coriander Leaves for garnishing


Note : tsp is teaspoon
tbsp is tablespoon
