English in a Minute: Let Sleeping Dogs Lie

Welcome to English in a Minute! 

Dogs, like most animals, need sleep. So, what could it mean to let sleeping dogs lie?  

A: Oh, Dan. My friend Rick is so upset with me.  
D: Why? What did you do? 
A: I beat him at a game of pool, by a lot.  
D: I see. Some people just hate to lose.  
A: I know, I will offer to give him pool lessons.  
D: That’s not going to help. Just let sleeping dogs lie.  

When we let sleeping dogs lie, we try to avoid making a problem any worse. In some cases, the best way to deal with a problem is to do nothing. Anna, offering Rick pool lessons is not going to make him feel better.
