The shocking tragedy of the fire at Grenfell Tower in North Kensington that claimed the lives of 72 men, women and children on the night of 14 June 2017, forever changed a community in the heart of West London. Fatima Elguenuni’s own daughter-in-law and grandchildren were some of the last survivors to make it out of the burning tower. In her strikingly powerful talk, Fatima speaks of her personal involvement in the aftermath. How she used her experience as a therapist and mental health practitioner to help her community to heal. How she witnessed the disconnect between local authority, public services and local people turn into frustration, anger and mistrust. And how she and others helped to bridge this gap through authenticity, honesty and human connection. Fatima has been member of the North Kensington community for over 20 years. Since the Grenfell tragedy Fatima has had a major a role in helping organisations to develop relationships with local communities to move beyond Grenfell. She is passionate to ensuring that the community voice is amplified at decision-making levels both locally and nationally. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
