What is Chemotherapy?
Chemotherapy is a medical treatment that uses powerful drugs to kill rapidly dividing cancer cells. These drugs not only target cancer cells but can also affect healthy cells, leading to side effects.
Types of Chemotherapy
There are several types of chemotherapy, such as curative chemo, palliative chemo, and adjuvant chemo. Curative chemo is used to completely eliminate cancer, while palliative chemo is used to manage symptoms. Adjuvant chemo is given after surgery or radiation to kill any remaining cancer cells.
Use of Chemotherapy
Chemotherapy is used to shrink cancer, reduce symptoms, and destroy cancer cells before or after surgery. It also helps in controlling metastatic cancer.
Medications and Effects of Chemotherapy
Chemotherapy drugs such as cisplatin, paclitaxel, and carboplatin directly target cancer cells. However, side effects such as nausea, hair loss, and fatigue are also common.
Early Stage of Cancer
In the early stages of cancer, chemotherapy is usually combined with surgery as part of a treatment plan. This helps in eliminating cancer cells early on.
Chemo for Stage 4 Cancer
In stage 4 cancer, chemotherapy plays a role in managing symptoms and slowing disease progression. It helps improve the patient's quality of life.
Why Chemo Before Surgery?
The goal of administering chemotherapy before surgery is to shrink the tumor, making the surgery easier and more successful. This is called neoadjuvant therapy.
Why Chemo After Cure?
Chemotherapy is given after a cure to prevent cancer from recurring. This is known as adjuvant therapy, which aims to eliminate any remaining microscopic cancer cells.
Conclusion
Chemotherapy is a powerful treatment, but it is essential to understand it and plan it correctly. Dr. Praveen Kammar emphasizes that with the right diagnosis, timely treatment, and proper care, chemotherapy can have a better impact.
