Getting to Nikko from Midtown Tokyo:
Go to the Hibiya Line stations, choosing which one is closer - Akasaka or Nogizaka. Go to Kita-Senju station. Exit in the direction of the train. Follow the signs to Tobu Skyline line to platforms 1-2. Look under your feet on the platforms for a bold strip with the words Express Line. This is platform 3, which is accessed from platforms 1-2. There is also a ticket kiosk there. Pay with credit cards or cash. For early morning trains, buying tickets online and in advance is better. Starting from 10 am, you can get a ticket directly at the station. On weekends and holidays, it is also better to buy in advance. We bought our return ticket online immediately after buying the morning ticket.

There is a kiosk with hot and cold drinks at the station. There is a covered warm room to wait for the train.

At Nikko, the train arrives at the station, where there is all the information a tourist needs in several languages, including English. There is a bus station 50 meters from the train station’s exit. It has three queues for three routes. Two go to Okunikko, the lake, waterfalls, onsen, and trails. The middle one goes to Nikko shrines and temples.

If your day trip is dedicated to Okunikko, take a bus toward Lake Chuzenji, Yumoto Onsen. There are bus station signs with information about bus directions and schedules. It is better to get in line for your bus boarding as soon as you arrive in Nikko. Otherwise, you may not be able to get on the bus. You must wait for the next bus, which may not arrive soon.
