In 2011, Jerusalem became the first city in Israel to operate a public tram / light rail system (followed by Tel Aviv in 2023). The initial "red line" contains 36 stations and has a line length of just over 20KM.

Currently the city is advancing construction works and final route approvals on two new light rail routes: the "green line" which will provide connections to many of the city's southern neighborhoods and the "blue line" which will connect the Hebrew University campus in Mount Scopus with the city center and Ramot.

The huge amount of construction that the installation of the lines will necessitate has been a source of contention between Jerusalemites and city leadership. The new lines are expected to begin operation in 2027.
