In Sankara's Advaita Vedanta, the universe is seen as the body of Isvara, the supreme being. This analogy is used to explain the relationship between Brahman, the ultimate reality, and the world of appearances. Brahman is described as being pure consciousness, without any attributes or limitations. It is the source of all existence, but it is not the same as the created universe. The universe is a manifestation of Brahman, but it is not Brahman itself. Sankara uses the analogy of Isvara's body to explain how the universe can be both real and unreal at the same time. On the one hand, the universe is real in the sense that we experience it and interact with it on a daily basis. However, on the other hand, the universe is unreal in the sense that it is not Brahman, the ultimate reality. The universe is like Isvara's body because it is a manifestation of Isvara's consciousness. Just as a human body is a manifestation of the human soul, the universe is a manifestation of the divine consciousness. However, just as a human body is not the same as the human soul, the universe is not the same as Brahman. The human body is a temporary manifestation of the soul, and it will eventually die. Similarly, the universe is a temporary manifestation of Brahman, and it will eventually be dissolved back into Brahman. The analogy of Isvara's body is a way of understanding the relationship between Brahman and the universe. It helps us to see that the universe is both real and unreal at the same time. It is real in the sense that we experience it and interact with it, but it is unreal in the sense that it is not Brahman, the ultimate reality. The analogy of Isvara's body is also a way of understanding the interconnectedness of all things. Just as all parts of a human body are interconnected, all parts of the universe are interconnected. We are all part of Isvara's body, and we are all part of Brahman.
The universe as Isvara's body is a central metaphor in Sankara's Advaita Vedanta, a non-dualistic school of Hindu philosophy. Advaita Vedanta teaches that Brahman, the ultimate reality, is one and without a second. Brahman is both immanent and transcendent, meaning that it is both present within all things and beyond all things.
