Medieval Celtic Harp: Lai - French Trouvere song (arr: Deborah Friou)

I have learned that a society and culture can only remain healthy if the balance between beauty and utility is upheld in its creations. I feel this is something worth deeply considering in this modern age where the necessity of that balance is at risk of being forgotten. Lai is a Medieval French 13th Century Trouvere song. I selected this song because of my fascination with the Trouvere way of life. During the Twelfth to the Thirteenth Centuries in Northern France, the Trouvere's were aristocratic Poets and Musicians. They were influenced by, and were contemporary with the Troubadours. A 'Lai' is a style of song that is characteristic of the Trouvreres and up to 800 of their songs were recorded and are still in existence today.
The troubadours and trouvères were not simply poor, itinerant, wandering minstrals as is commonly believed. They were either poets and composers who were supported by the aristocracy, or aristocrats themselves. Kings, queens, counts and countesses were among the Trouveres. The creation and performance of music was part of the courtly tradition and like today a form of cultural and self expression. The lyrics of the songs were naturally a reflection of society at that time. They often revolve around romanticised courtly love, religious or spiritual devotion and humour including crude satire. It’s inspiring to delve into the art of a past culture and explore history that way. It gives a more emotional perspective on past events.

The arrangement of this song is by Deborah Friou and featured in her book 'Early Music for the Harp'. I chose to use the arrangement because I enjoyed it's rhythm and simplicity. This video is not being shared for monetary gain, it is simply a creative expression and so my daughter Charlotte Elise could attempt her first videography session. I think she did incredibly!!! I am astonished that she did so well at her first time filming something!
