Best Frame Rate? | 10fps vs 15fps vs 24fps | Stop Motion Basics

When I first started making stop motion videos, I wasn't sure what frame rate to shoot in: 10, 15, 24... or something in between? There were so many options and I tried them all. Whats the best frame rate for stop motion?? Hmmmm...

If you're unfamiliar with frame rate and what it means to shoot in, say, 10 frames per second (fps): this means that for every second of video, you will need to shoot 10 pictures. If you shoot at 15fps, then you'll need 15 pictures for every second of video. Obviously, you'll do less work with 10fps as compared to 15fps. So if you're wondering what's the best frame rate for you (10fps vs 15fps vs 24fps), that's something to consider.

In this stop motion basics tutorial, I'll show a frame rate comparison for animation and how these look while shooting a simple car scene. Each frame rate looks a bit different from the next, and each has its own advantages. I made a more dynamic car scene to demonstrate these frame rates so you can have an idea of how it looks in action.

I recommend taking the time to watch each example in this tutorial as they each not only demonstrate the frame rate but also what it will take to shoot within that frame rate. In the end of this tutorial video, I'll discuss what I feel is the best frame rate to shoot in.

This stop motion basics tutorial is a part of a series I'm putting together that covers (amazingly enough) stop motion basics (gasp!). I'm not very technical when discussing these techniques/concepts, so I hope that is a good thing and makes it easier to understand. I did a frame rate comparision video here because, to me, deciding what the best frame rate is for me has made a huge difference in my workflow.

What have found to be the best frame rate for you? What do you shoot in? Let me know in the comments!
