Maurice Ravel (1875-1937)

This is piece is written as a memorial to François Couperin “the Great” (1668-1733) however, Ravel intended to pay homage to the character of French keyboard suites by imitating a Baroque dance suite. Neoclassicism, a twentieth-century trend in which composers sought to create a Westernized “classical” style, is heavily prominent through the entirety of the suite. Each movement is dedicated to a friend of Ravel’s who had died while fighting during World War I.

In memory of Jean Dreyfus (at whose home Ravel recuperated after he was demobilized)

In memory of Captain Joseph de Marliave (musicologist and husband of Marguerite Long)
