Bryn Terfel performing "Wie oft in Meeres tiefsten Schlund" from Richard Wagner's opera The Flying Dutchman during the final of the 1989 Cardiff Singer Of The World competition.

The phenomenal showdown with contemporary Dmitri Hvorostovsky during the Main Prize final soon became known as the 'Battle of the Baritones' and, until this day, marks one of the highlights of the competition's history.
The Welsh bass-baritone won the newly introduced Lieder Prize that year. Initially associated with Mozart (Figaro, Leporello and Don Giovanni in particular), he has since moved on to heavier roles as found in Puccini's and Wagner's catalogues.
