Ramacharitmanas is the sixteenth-century epic poem composed in Awadhi by Goswami Tulsidas. In this popular version, Tulsidas made Lord Rama accessible to the common people. Philp Lutgendorf’s publication of the seventh volume of The Epic of Ram, the English translation of the poem in 2023 coincides with the 450th anniversary of the epic’s traditional date of composition. Together with renowned writer, poet and cultural figure, Yatindra Mishra, and writer and academic Harish Trivedi, they focus on the history, significance and timeless nature of this epic text and its abiding impact on Indian culture in a conversation with Pragya Tiwari.

Philip Lutgendorf, Professor Emeritus of Hindi and Modern Indian Studies at the University of Iowa, is the author of The Life of a Text: Performing the Rāmcaritmānas of Tulsidas and of Hanuman’s Tale, The Messages of a Divine Monkey. He recently completed a seven-volume translation of the Ramcharitmanas for the Murty Classical Library of India.

Yatindra Mishra is a celebrated Hindi poet, music and cinema scholar. He has four collections of Hindi poetry, several well received books on Indian Classical music & cinema, including Girija (Based on Girija Devi), Devpriya (Dialogue with Sonal Mansingh), Sur Ki Baradari (Life & Times of Ustad Bismillah Khan) and Akhtari (Life & Music of Begum Akhtar). He has edited the gazetteer of Faizabad titled Shahernama Faizabad and authored Ayodhya: Parampara, Sanskriti, Virasat. His book Lata:Sur-Gatha won a total of six awards in 2017 including the prestigious 64th National Film Award for Best Writing on Cinema (Swarna Kamal) and MAMI Mumbai Film Festival Award for Best Writing on Cinema. He has served as the Jury Chairman for the 69th National Film Awards. His latest book Gulzar: Hazaar Rahen Mud Ke Dekhi is based on the life and works of filmmaker Gulzar.

Harish Trivedi, former professor of English at the University of Delhi, has also taught at universities in Chicago and London. He has published books and articles on Translation, Indian literature and World Literature amongst others. He writes in both English and Hindi.

Pragya Tiwari is a strategy and culture consultant, Creative Director of Oijo Media and co-founder of the Indian History Collective. As a journalist she has written extensively on politics, identity, policy, and culture and has edited several publications, including Tehelka, The Big Indian Picture, and Vice.
