Most candles are made from paraffin wax, which is a byproduct of petroleum refining.

When burned, they release compounds like benzene and toluene—both linked to serious health risks.

Even candles labeled “natural” often contain synthetic fragrances listed as “parfum,” which can include phthalates and other endocrine disruptors. And among other issues there are also the wicks that can still contain trace metals (including lead).

Regular use indoors adds up, and studies show it can push air quality below safe levels—sometimes worse than city smog. Yet there’s almost no oversight on what these candles emit. That’s why the wax, fragrance, and wick actually matter.
