Malaysia often presents itself as a champion of human rights, justice, and the voice of the Global South. In recent weeks, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim announced a RM100 million donation to Gaza during the launch of Sumud Nusantara and Malaysiaku Bersama Gaza, citing ideals of compassion and solidarity. He even invoked Edward Said’s reminder that the politics of Palestine is the politics of dispossession, where families, homes, and dignity are stripped away. These words are powerful, but they also raise difficult questions about the consistency of Malaysia’s stance on human rights.

When leaders speak passionately about democracy and morality abroad, it is worth asking how these values are applied at home. While donations and gestures are framed as symbolic, Malaysia continues to struggle with collapsing healthcare, unpaid pensions, refugee marginalization, and human rights concerns highlighted by international watchdogs. Critics argue that such foreign aid is more about political performance than genuine commitment, especially when other global crises like Yemen and Sudan receive little attention. This contrast feeds into the growing perception of hypocrisy within Malaysia’s foreign policy.
