0:00 Intro
Photography in the woods can be a lot harder than taking photos in other landscapes. Especially people new to landscape photography can be struggling a lot to find a good composition in the forest. That’s because woodlands tend to be very chaotic with a lot of lines and shapes. But don’t worry, here are four tips to get awesome forest photos:

0:19 1. Use a longer focal length
Using a wide angle lens makes it harder to find a good compositions since more things (like branches and plants) will fill the frame and thus make everything more chaotic. By using a longer focal length you’re zooming in and thus you can focus on details and keep unnecessary things out of the photo. Also remember, the forest floor is usually the most chaotic part. You don’t have to include it in the photo!

1:24 2. Search for leading lines
To get a good composition you want to include leading lines in the photo. Those can be very hard to find in the forest. An easy way to get leading lines however is to simply look out for roads or creeks as they will greatly improve the composition.

2:05 3. Separate color
Especially in the autumn season its worth to look out for single colorful trees or tree branches. For example, find a tree branch with yellow leaves against a dark, blue-ish forest background. Using the right focal length and a little bit of editing will give you very pleasing photos.

2:37 4. Take advantage of the weather
Especially on foggy days, it’s worth exploring the forest. You can either create mystical photos in thick fog or try to capture sun rays shining trough the trees. Just keep in mind for the sun rays you have to be at the right altitude or otherwise they won’t be visible. Also, to get vibrant colors use a polarization filter on your lens and go exploring when the forest is still a little wet.
