Abstract: Lichen zonation is one of the most characteristic aspects of rocky shore ecology, yet still remarkably little is known about the evolution, adaptation, and ecology of lichens in this incredibly dynamic environment. In this talk, I will revisit the classic structure of lichen zonation, and discuss new research from our group that is helping to expand our understanding of the ecological and biological factors that influence distribution and niche adaptation of lichens on the rocky shore. I will also discuss some specific work that we have carried out on photobiont diversity in the intertidal cyanolichen, Lichina pygmaea.

Bio: Nathan is a postdoctoral research associate in the Cunliffe Lab at the Marine Biological Association. After completing a BSc in Ecology at the University of Leeds and a masters in Biological Oceanography at the National Oceanography Centre in Southampton, he went on to complete his PhD on the evolution of cyanobacteria in polar environments at the University at Bristol. He now works on the ecology and biology of marine and aquatic fungi, and has developed a special interest in intertidal and coastal lichens.
