The Para Basic Course for the special forces of the Indian Armed Forces is conducted by the Paratroopers Training School under Army Airborne Training School, based at Agra Airforce Station. The Special Forces have to do this course after their probation. The Exact same course is conducted twice a year for the NCC cadets. About 20 Male and 20 Female Cadets per course in the month of September and November. The Selection of NCC cadets for this course is done by respective 17 Directorates of NCC. Once selected, cadets are trained along with the Special forces and regular airborne troops.
The Basic Parachute Course is 3 weeks long for regular troops. During that time, trainees are instructed in exit, flight and landing techniques. They are required to complete Five descents/Jumps, one at night, to qualify for their 'WINGS'. In groups of Ten, each with its own Indian Airforce parachute jumping instructor (PJI), trainees are taught the techniques of jumping individually and in 'sticks', both with and without equipment.
Trainees are taught fight drills while suspended from the hangar roof in parachute harnesses on cables. They learn to control their parachutes while descending, and to carry out emergency measures, such as untwisting their rigging lines, taking the necessary action on colliding with another parachutist, and landing in water. Techniques for landing safely are taught using mats. As trainees become more proficient, the height from which they jump is increased by the use of steps and eventually ramps which they run and jump off of. Forward, side and backwards landings are practiced on a Circular trapeze from which the trainees hang by their hands while being swung in the air. On the command of the PJI, trainees let go and perform the appropriate roll on landing.
The next stage involves the fan trainer. Wearing a harness connected to a cable wound round a drum fitted with fan blades, trainees jump from a platform located near the roof of the hangar; as they fall, their rate of descent is controlled to simulate that with a parachute. Wearing harnesses suspended from them, trainees jump from the trainer and travel the length of the cables in a gradual descent towards the ground, where their progress is arrested by an instructor.
The Final stage of the course consists of a parachute descent/jump from AN-32 Aircraft. Trainees carry out their first descent from AN-32 in single 'sticks' of 11 to 13 in Null Wind. Their second descent is in light winds. Trainees then make their third and fourth descends in medium winds. This is followed by a night descent.
PARACHUTE BADGE/WINGS
On successful completion of their five descents/jumps, trainees are presented with their ‘WINGS’ by the Officer Commanding Paratroopers training school, NCC trainees are presented with their wings by an NCC Group commander, A Best cadet in Course title is given to one Male cadet and one Female cadet of NCC who perform well in all the tests before the jumps. Troops and NCC cadets then return to their units as qualified parachutists with Wings and Certificate from Paratroopers training school.
The Parachute Badge with Wings insignia is only to be worn by a qualified parachutist.
