ITN Exclusive: "Whatever 'in love' means" – Charles and Diana Engagement Interview in Full (1981)

On 24 February 1981, Prince Charles, Prince of Wales and Lady Diana Spencer gave an exclusive interview to ITN about their engagement, which was announced via the Lord Chancellor at 11am that morning. Though the interview is nearly 10 minutes long, it is best remembered for Prince Charles' response to the reporter's suggestion that the couple were in love. "Whatever 'in love' means..." replied Charles, "you can put your own interpretation there."

Together with Lady Diana's expression at the interview's end, Charles' words have come to be seen as a harbinger of the ill-fated relationship between the Prince of Wales and his first wife, Diana, Princess of Wales. The Prince and Princess of Wales separated 11 years later, in December 1992, and finalised their divorce in 1996 – just a year before Diana's death.
