Ethel Kremer Schwabacher (1903-1984) was an accomplished painter, author, and intellectual who played a significant role in the history and development of American modern art. Her works, known for their vivid and painterly abstractions, often drew inspiration from the unconscious and explored themes of womanhood and childbirth. In later years, she also created figurative pieces that linked personal traumas to Greek myths. Throughout her career, Ethel interacted with many prominent artists, including Arshlle Gorky, Max Weber, William de Kooning, Elaine de Kooning, and Richard Pousette Dart.

Born in New York in 1903 to Eugene Kremer and Agnes Oppenheimer, Ethel made her first paintings at the age of five in her parent's garden in Pelham. Growing up, her parents, both attorneys, fostered a cultured and affluent lifestyle that encouraged her creativity.

After attending the prestigious Horace Mann School Ethel enrolled in the Art Student’s
League at the age of 15. and then for nine years with Robert Laurent. After her father’s death in 1920 she devoted herself to making a three panel plaster relief to memorialize him. She also studied sculpture for a year at the National Academy of Design.
