Korea will deliver 50,000 tons of excess rice to developing countries starting from next year.

The country's Cabinet has recently passed the Agriculture Ministry's proposal to join the Food Assistance Convention (FAC).

The London-based FAC promotes humanitarian food assistance to developing nations. This is under the auspices of the United Nations. The entry into the FAC is needed to proceed with the humanitarian food aid project.

Once Korea enters the London-based FAC, about 50,000 tons of excess rice will be provided to developing countries via the U.N. World Food Programme next year.

Although Korea has offered hundreds of tons of rice under its international aid programs, this is the first time for it to deliver such a huge volume of rice via an international food assistance treaty.

This rice aid program will not only stabilize the supply of rice and its prices in the country and but also contribute to global humanitarian projects.

Last year, Korea had about 300,000 tons of excess rice. It is expected that there will be overproduction of 200,000 tons for this year.
