Chennai High Court introduces 'Braille Printer' for the benefit of blind lawyers and advocates: first introduced in the Indian judiciary *

Chennai: For the first time in the history of the Indian judiciary, a braille printer facility has been introduced at the Chennai High Court and the Madurai branch of the High Court for the benefit of blind lawyers and lawyers.

The High Court is located in Chennai, the capital of Tamil Nadu, and the Madurai branch of the High Court is functioning under its jurisdiction. Most important cases are heard in the Chief Justice of the Chennai High Court.

Video investigations have been ongoing for more than a year and a half due to corona restrictions. Restrictions are currently being relaxed and live trial and video conferencing is underway. Only lawyers are allowed to enter the High Court. Lawyers are not allowed. However, advocates who wish to appear in person in person as a ‘party-in-person’ are allowed to enter the High Court.

In this context, for the first time in the history of the Indian judiciary, a ‘Braille Printer’ facility has been introduced in the Chennai High Court for the benefit of visually impaired and blind lawyers and lawyers. Accordingly, these ‘Braille Printers’ have been set up at the Chennai High Court and the Madurai branch of the High Court.

This will enable the visually impaired or visually impaired to read the orders, copies of judgments and documents issued by the High Court on a daily basis. These printers can print up to 350 pages per hour on both sides.

Modified by software

As a rule of thumb the software in this printer converts copies of orders and judgments typed in English online into Braille pages and prints them out in dotted form on white sheets.

High Court Alternative Advocate RMD Nasrulla said:

It is commendable that due to the development of information technology, the BraillePrinter has facilitated the benefit of alternative lawyers and advocates like us in the field of justice. This will enable the more than 20 alternative lawyers in the Chennai High Court, the visually impaired lawyers, to read the High Court judgments arbitrarily without any assistance.

Already, if attorneys in the High Court link their cell phone numbers to appearing cases, their registration number and details are checked and approved online for cases that they have to appear on a daily basis. In addition, lawyers can get all the details of the case via instant text message.

‘Video Library’

If the Chennai High Court introduces such an online facility and an ‘video library’ facility with audio facility for easy access to alternatively abled lawyers, it will be a model for the country.

That way, alternatively abled lawyers like us can easily hear and understand court decisions and documents on their cell phones.

Thus he said.
