Puraka masks require a clean Pm2.5 filter in order to be most effective. Filters work by acting as an electrostatic barrier, enhancing the physical filtration capability of cotton to provide protection against a range of particulate sizes.
If you rarely leave the house, it might feel like you can keep your filter in your mask forever. The best, and most important sign your filter is ready to be replaced is if you're finding it harder to breathe. Because the activated carbon in pm2.5 filters loses its potency over time, we recommend changing a filter after 2-3 weeks at the longest.
The Pm2.5 filters have a layer of active carbon fabric to help with odor control, but your mask should still be washed periodically, even if you use a UV box for surface sanitization.

The PM2.5 standard for filters and fabric masks has been used in Asia for more than 15 years. Factories producing true PM2.5 filters must be certified and submit to regulatory oversight. The American Society for Testing and Materials is currently developing a U.S. face-covering standard that will likely be met by a fabric mask and pm2.5 filter combination.
Your fabric masks acts as a physical protective barrier, effective against large particles, but not very effective against fine aerosols. PM 2.5 filters act as an electrostatic barrier needed to stop the smallest sub-micron particulates. Recharging your mask is as simple as replacing the filter.

In laboratory testing,  cotton masks + PM2.5 filters achieve comparable protection vs. the N95, but restricted inhalation by just 71 Pa, less than 25% the max inhalation resistance of a NIOSH-certified N95 respirator
