The International Day of the World's Indigenous People is observed on August 9 each year to promote and protect the rights of the world’s Indigenous population. Vishwa Adiwasi Diwas 2024 was celebrated with great fervor in Jail Park, Ranchi. It is important to celebrate the day but it is also necessary to know the history behind how the day was chosen for Indigenous People.

We have Dr. Abhay Sagar Minz in this episode. Dr. Abhay Sagar Minz currently serves as an Assistant Professor at the University Department of Anthropology, DSMP University (formerly Ranchi College Ranchi). Dr. Minz completed his doctoral thesis on "Emerging Patterns of Migration from Tribal Jharkhand" from Ranchi University, Ranchi.

Dr. Abhay Sagar Minz has been an active advocate of tribal rights and issues, nationally and internationally since 2006. Presently, he holds the position of Director at the International Documentation Centre for Endangered Indigenous Languages and Cultures at DSPM University. Additionally, he holds honorary positions as a Member of the ICCAs Consortium, an International Expert Adviser at Youth For Environment Education and Development (YFEED Foundation) in Nepal, and an Adviser at Asia Young Indigenous Peoples Network (AYIPN) in the Philippines. Dr. Minz also lends his expertise as a former Young Alumni at the World Union of Jesuit Alumni and as the Chief Adviser of the All India Tribal Development Council, Jharkhand State.

In this podcast, we discussed the history of Vishwa Adiwasi Diwas, its origin, and its impact on Tribal communities. Dr. Minz told us about the challenges faced by the tribal communities. Talking about India and Jharkhand, we discussed how the classification was done for SC & ST communities and the Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs) in Jharkhand. Dr. Minz enlightened us about the scientific practices followed by tribals and how tribals can become part of modern society while maintaining their tribal identity.
