Our project explores the crucial role of creativity in software engineering, focusing on its impact in formulating novel solutions within software development tasks. We conducted a controlled human study wherein participants were tasked with developing a scoring algorithm for an online JavaScript game. By evaluating their creativity through established psychometric tests, we analyzed how creative thinking influences coding approaches, notably in incorporating visual and auditory elements. In our analysis, we considered key features such as developer experience and English proficiency, code size, and "visual-auditory elements" (such as color changes and animations). We employed the established machine learning technique of hierarchical agglomerative clustering along with Gap statistics, leveraging these features to categorize the varied coding strategies distinctly. The results indicate that developers possessing higher creativity scores employed a more comprehensive range of interactive elements, such as sophisticated animations and sound effects. This research contributes to the understanding of creativity's role in software engineering. It offers a foundation for enhancing educational strategies in software development, improving developer performance, and producing more engaging, innovative software solutions.
