Charlie Parker was one of the most brilliant musicians of all time, but he also had substance use issues his whole life. Though Parker had used since he was a teen and lived a ‘loose’ lifestyle, he managed to leave an incredible body of work, in recordings and live performances.
Parker was never arrested for drug possession, but he hit a low point on tour in Los Angeles in 1946 (& ended up in the State Hospital for six months.)
“Moose the Mooche” is named for his “connection” in L.A., and this song is about that difficult and crazy period, told through Bird’s eyes…The lyrics are sad and funny, but are not intended to make light of, or glorify, any people or behavior... Just an observation.
