A political solution - a sustainable solution - which would bring to Afghanistan an end of violence, an end of terror and an end of these humanitarian catastrophes. Which will bring Afghanistan a government based on the will of the Afghan people."

"After today's discussion, I'm sure that Afghanistan needs a political solution as soon as possible - which is far away from the interests of the Taliban - a solution which will prevent a humanitarian catastrophe. And I am certain this cannot be achieved under the Taliban regime."

STORYLINE:

German Foreign Minister, Joschka Fischer, praised on Friday what he called the courageous steps taken by Pakistan's President, General Pervez Musharraf, over combatting terrorism in the wake of the attacks on the United States.

He was speaking after a meeting with the president Musharraf.

Fischer reiterated his country's support for the United States but he wouldn't be drawn into discussing what might be the appropriate tactics.

He stressed the need for a political solution to bring about a government in Afghanistan which represented its people.

Fischer is in Pakistan for one day to pave the way for an official visit by German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder on October 28th.

He also spent several hours speaking with his Pakistani counterpart Abdul Sattar and with representatives of non-governmental organisations concerning the difficulties in providing humanitarian assistance in Afghanistan.

Also on his agenda for the visit was the current tension between Pakistan and India over the disputed territory of Kashmir, and ways to resolve the conflict.

Fischer is the latest in a long series of European leaders to visit Islamabad since the start of the current crisis.
