Released in arcades in 1983 by Nintendo, Donkey Kong 3 is a platformer/vertical shooter for 1 or 2 players (alternating). It is the second sequel to 1981's "Donkey Kong". In this version, a bugkeeper named Stanley tries to use bug spray to keep Donkey Kong from making angry bugs attack and protect vegetables panted in a greenhouse while also warding off the scared ape.
Besides being the first and only game in the series to not feature Mario, the game also introduces a shooting element that makes the game feel like a platforming version of shooters like Galaxian & Defender-Stanley is equipped with a sprayer that fires clouds of bug spray vertically towards the top of the screen and fade after a certain distance. Besides getting rid of attacking bugs, it also pushes Donkey Kong towards the top of the screen, which is the objective. Along the way, DK will knock down a super sprayer that, for a few seconds, lets the player fire colored spray blasts that do not fade with distance and reach up almost the entire screen as well as move faster. It also wipes out enemies in one shot where as the regular sprayer will only stun some enemies or require multiple hits to kill others. Some bugs also will fly down to the bottom of the screen to try and steal the vegetables-they must be shot to retrieve these before they get away. Clearing stages with vegetables in place awards bonus points, with a perfect bonus for all 5. DK attacks by shaking up beehives to release more bugs to fly around and attack you as well as sometimes throwing beehives at you. If you make contact with a bug or get hit by a thrown hive, you lose a life. There are two different losing animations depending on how it happens. The game is over if you lose all lives.
Like in the prior games in the series, there are a number of levels in order where DK tries to escape and a final level where, if you can cause DK to move up enough to get his head stuck in a beehive at the top of the screen, you win and move on to the next loop at a higher difficulty level with more new levels. The game is endless and it appears Nintendo resolved the "kill screen" bug that prevented progression past level 22 in the first 2 Donkey Kong games.

This would be the last appearance for Donkey Kong in arcades until Nintendo brought its iconic "Mario Kart" series to arcades in the 21st century, but in the meantime DK would take a few years off then make his triumphant return in the 1994 Super NES blockbuster "Donkey Kong Country", his first true leading role and would go on to become hugely popular as both a leading star and supporting character in many future Nintendo games.

Fun Fact: Nintendo left one irrelevant but funny bug unresolved in this game-on the high score screen, if you got to enter your initials the phrase "Your Name Was Registered" is misspelled as "Your Name Registrated".

The game was released for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1987.
