Everyone lost their minds when Dave Portnoy [Barstool Sports / One Bite Pizza Reviews] gave this cake a 9.4 rating while at DeFazio's Pizzaria in Troy, New York. For good reason!

This is a delicious, orange, boozy take on a traditional Italian spirit-infused cake is beyond tender. If you can eat just one bite, you're a better human than I!

This is my take on how to make the famous Italian Hangover Cake originating from DeFazio's Pizzaria in upstate New York.

RECIPE:

Preheat oven to 350c/177c

For the boozy syrup:

1.5 cups of water
1 cup granulated sugar
1/4 cup vodka
1/4 cup Grand Marnier
1/4 cup amaretto

Bring to a boil and simmer for a few minutes. Make sure to cool this down completely.

For the cake mix:
Zest and juice medium orange; set aside

In separate bowl, sift together dry ingredients:
3 cups cake flour
1 TBSPN baking powder
2 tspn baking soda

Wet ingredients:
3/4 cup milk (use 2% or higher if possible but skim is ok)
juice from orange
3 TBSPN Grand Marnier

Mixing Bowl:
1.75 cups of sugar
Zest from 1 medium orange

Combine the zest and sugar and muddle together. Sugar will take on a orange hue as you draw out the oils from the zest. Add 1 cup of softened butter (2 sticks) and mix until light and fluffy.

Slowly drizzle in 1/2 cup EVOO as well as 4 large eggs one at a time. This is now ready for the dry and wet mixtures from above to be incorporated.

Add 1/3 of the dry ingredients, then 1/2 milk mixture. Take care to stagger the remaining wet and dry mixtures -- you should end with the final 1/3 of the dry ingredients.

Generously oil a bundt pan and add batter. Don't forget to give it a few taps to settle the batter.

Bake for approx 50 minutes. Start checking after 45 with the toothpick / knife test. The cake is down when it comes out clean.

Once out, poke approx 20 holes along the top of the cake and pour 1/2 the syrup (approx 1 cup) as uniformly as possible. Reserve the other cup of syrup until cake is fully cooled.

ALLOW TO COOL FOR AT LEAST 1 HOUR before flipping it onto your serving platter.
