This tutorial shows you how to build a simple yet effective deep water culture hydroponics system for growing leafy greens. The system utilizes only readily-available and inexpensive components and takes only minutes to set up. A few notes from the video: you can use smaller rockwool plugs and surround them with the clay balls, but make sure the rockwool stays moist until the roots grow down. An easy way to keep the rockwool moist is to allow the water to just barely touch the bottom (but do NOT submerge it; this will drown your plants' young roots). For planting, always follow the instructions on the seed packet for depth. Poking holes in rockwool for planting is easy, just use a pencil. These systems can be used outdoors, though you may want to add some small overflow holes to the side of the tote in case of heavy rains. However, the most common usage is for indoor grows. For lights, we encourage you to try some DIY options. LED will be far superior to any other artificial source. Try to use a very cold white or blue-enriched spectrum.
