Kaweka Backcountry Hunters | Mangaturutu - Venison Top - Middle Hill Hut

In Part-3, John and I met a diverse group of good humans, known as hunters in each of the backcountry huts of Mangaturutu, Venison Tops & Middle Hill in the rugged Kaweka Forest Park, New Zealand. See below for further description & timestamps.

This is part-3 of our Kaweka Forest adventure; I do recommend you watch Part 1 & 2 first.

Outdoorsman Dave brings you the real McCoy of Outdoor Adventures!
In this video, we take you deep into the backcountry of the New Zealand wilderness, do the hard yards with hours of tough hiking to bring you, true New Zealand outdoor adventures for your entertainment pleasure. In Part-3 we introduce you to the diversity of our mountain huts and the rugged individuals, mainly hunters that you will find there!

John & I spent the night at Mangaturutu Hut with hunters Hammish & Mark & their two dogs and in the morning we show you around and explain how the New Zealand DOC hut system works and the purpose of the hut intentions book.

We find a geocache on the track and meet two top kiwi blokes & hunters being 85-year-old Peter and his son Clayton at the Venison Tops or Tira Lodge where they immediately welcome to their whare with the offer of a cuppa of tea, followed up by an ice-cold beer.
This is the true spirit of kiwi hospitality in the backcountry!

Reluctantly we need to push on, and take you through both the forests and stunning exposed and often sketchy ridgeline of the Venison Tops. We hike past the Ballard Hut junction, over Whetu (1650m), and down the Camp Spur track to arrive at Middle Hill Hut. Here we are met by two more hunters, a young married couple that have had a successful hunt the day before and are with their friend, a keen photographer.

It was a bad nights sleep for me as evidenced in my voice but John & I push on again early, dropping down onto the Makahu Road where we walk a kilometre up it to the start of the Makino Track where once again the true kiwi spirit is demonstrated and we are picked up by our new friends from Middle Hill Hut and dropped off at our car.

A hot soak and final farewells at the Mangatutu Hot Springs and a traditional beer at a pub on the long drive home completes yet another memorable Outdoorsman Dave Adventure.
