NILZA WANGMO

This zJunglu describes the painful separation of a mother from her child as well as from her beloved husband. In this song she pleads to the famous Oracle of Matho "sRongstan Gampo" as well as to the second Buddha "Guru Padmasambhava" to let her stay at Leh palace somehow with her Child Prince Saskyong.

The stanzas are heart wrenching if one listens and understands it meaning carefully and deeply.

"Komchen bo chi-ru gyab pa sang; semba vo nang di-ru lus" which translates to-

"Even if I go back to loh-man thang/mustang; my mind/heart is still with my child Saskyong."

"Nilza la ltams pa vy, Saskyong ni skumkhar e nang di-ru lus" means:-

"Born to Nilza, Saskyong remained in the Royal palace of leh, although I returned to loh-man thang/Mustang"

The princess of Loh-man thang(present day mustang,Nepal) was given in marriage to the then king of Maryul Ladakh Deskyong Namgyal who ruled from circa 1720-40 AD. They had a son namely prince Saskyong Namgyal. King Deskyong Namgyal was the first born of his father king Nima Namgyal and his mother Queen Sakyong Wangmo. As early tradition continued the first born was made to rule the kingdom while the second, third child had to necessarily ordained as novice monks at Hemis or other Gompas.

During that period between 1720-40 in the twin province of U and Tsang of Tibet, the authorities were earnestly looking for the reincarnation of Panchen Rinpochey/Panchen Lama. The oracles predicted that he was in the lap of Nilza(sun and moon). The meaning of prediction was understood and in the province of U and especially in Tsang elaborate religious ritual were conducted for quite a long time and participated by almost 40,000 abbots,Geshes, oracles, and venerated monks to somehow bring Queen Nilza Wangmo to Tibet. This practice was countered by elaborate religious ritual in Maryul Ladakh. However the more powerful and elaborate religious ritual of Tibet is said to gain the upper hand and soon there was small quarrel between Queen Nilza Wangmo and king Deskyong Namgyal which by time grew it's wounds deeper into both of their mind and soul and divorce was given to the Queen.

We know from history that on a pleasant day when Queen Nilza Wangmo and her friends/attendees were bathing in a pond below the Chubi village probably Karzoo zing, she kept her precious turquoise stone on a boulder along with her clothes. It seems the turquoise stone was presented to her by her husband Deskyong Namgyal itself. Legend has it that a Magpie managed to steal the precious stone and flew away. This act is attributed to the religious ritual performed in Tibet. After knowing that the turquoise stone was stolen by a magpie king Deskyong Namgyal became furious and their relation didn't remain cordial and serious blames were put on the Queen. The Queen being a foreigner and the king being native ruler both were mentally disturbed and at last divorce was given.

The folk song is seemed to be written and sang by the Queen Nilza Wangmo herself after getting divorce and separation from her son prince Saskyong Namgyal. The people of ladakh think of it as a tragic song and it shows that the general public didn't liked the divorce given to the Queen. After this Queen Nilza Wangmo returned to loh-man thang/mustang and was soon taken to Central Tibet for marriage. There in Tibet she gave birth to Panchen Paldan Eshey the 6th Panchen Lama.

The fate of her previous son prince Saskyong Namgyal was different as he got admission into the Hemis Monastery as a novice Monk and later became the 'Gyalrtsas Rinpoche'. He share the same mother with the 6th Panchen Lama/Rinpoche'.
