Drones have long been one of the most important weapons on the battlefields of the Russian-Ukrainian war. But in recent months, the Ukrainian Armed Forces have come up with a new use for them that did not exist before. Now, the devices, which were previously exclusively civilian, carry not only bombs and mines, but also built-in grenade launchers, assault rifles, and even rain “fire” on the enemy. A small drone circles a forest plantation somewhere on the front line and generously pours fire on it. It looks impressive. These drones are called “dragon drones” and have proven to be very effective on the battlefield.
The footage shows a quadcopter with such ammunition circling over the forest and pouring incendiary mixture on the Russian positions. The “dragon drone” is a very effective means of smoking out or destroying enemy positions.
Although the representative of the Ukrainian Land Forces Command did not name the substance, it is highly likely that the effect of the “fire rain” is due to the discharge of thermite, a powdered mixture of aluminum and iron oxide.
Its burning temperature is about 2200 degrees Celsius. Therefore, in a matter of seconds, it can not only burn vegetation, but also burn metal and cause severe damage to the enemy.
A single small FPV drone can carry about half a kilogram of the mixture. When the drone operator approaches the target, he remotely initiates the ignition of the mixture and starts dropping it over the enemy's positions.
Even if the soldier manages to escape from the target area, some of his belongings, weapons or ammunition will be destroyed by the fire. It is also important that the forest plantation itself will be scorched and will cease to be a reliable shelter for enemy infantry. It is extremely difficult to extinguish such a fire.
