Russia-Ukraine standoff: Civilians evacuated from eastern Ukraine amid ceasefire violations

Warning sirens blared in Donetsk after it and the other self-proclaimed "People's Republic," Luhansk, announced the evacuation of hundreds of thousands of people to Russia, with women, children and the elderly going first.

The evacuation order came after Russian-backed separatists and Ukrainian government traded accusations of a ceasefire in the eastern city of Donetsk.

Rebels said that a parked jeep with nobody inside had been blown up near a government building in the centre of the city of Donetsk.

On the other hand, national police of Ukraine released a video on Friday showing what they said was a fire at a residential building in the government-held eastern Ukraine after shelling on Thursday.

Kyiv and the rebels blamed each other for the escalation after artillery and mortar attacks on Thursday, prompting fears that Russia, which has massed over 100,000 troops near Ukraine's borders, could get involved.
