Time for a tropical whiskey!

This is the Irishman Caribbean cask whiskey, and it’s a really nice one. The Irishman whiskey comes from the Walsh whiskey company, and it’s the sister whiskey to Writer’s Tears. Like Writers Tears, it’s a blend of single malt and single pot still whiskey, but the ratio is different. In this case, it’s made up of 70% single malt, and 30% pot still, so the core of the whiskey should be a bit sweeter, with some spicy accents from the pot still coming through.

The Irishman is one of those brands that has been steadily working away in the background of Irish whiskey, delivering solid, easy-drinking whiskeys and steadily picking up awards, despite not always getting the same fanfare as some of the more well-known brands.

This version of the Irishman was finished in Caribbean rum casks however! It’s natural colour, non- chill-filtered and comes in at 46% ABV. After maturing in ex-bourbon casks for between 6 and 8 years, the whiskey was finished in St. Lucia rum casks from the Chairman’s Reserve brand for 6 months. This should hopefully increase those sweet notes you get from single malt and ex-bourbon casks, while also adding some nice rum and tropical fruit flavours.

So let’s dive in and see how it is!

Irishman Caribbean Cask tasting notes:
Nose:
It’s very sweet on the approach, with apples, pears, and buttery, creamy toffee. There’s a lot of malted grain character, with a little hint of pot still spice, as well as some honeycomb and golden raisins.

Palate:
It’s got a rich mouthfeel, with toffee, caramel, banana pudding, orchard fruits and some malted grain sweetness. The second sip was even creamier, like toffee or milk chocolate, there was some nice earthy sweetness from the rum finish, but nothing particularly distinct

Finish:
The finish is medium, with the spice lasting longer than the sweetness, revealing a little bit of pepper and oak spice

Overall, this is a solid little whiskey, while I don’t think it’s lifechanging, it’s definitely a well-constructed and easy drinking dram, and sometimes, that’s all you want from a whiskey.
