The Lost Horse Press Contemporary Ukrainian Poetry Series was founded in 2017 by Christine Holbert (Publisher) and Grace Mahoney (Series Editor). Since its founding, two to four books of Ukrainian poetry in English translation are published annually with the Series. The editions are dual-language, include introductory essays, and feature the leading poets and translators of the Ukrainian language working today. The Series has garnered critical attention in the form of literary awards and reviews, including a PEN America Award for Poetry, the Derek Walcott Prize, and one title is a finalist for the Griffin Poetry Prize.

From its earliest oral traditions, poetry has been an integral part of Ukrainian culture— a vital force of its very psyche. In recent times, this was evidenced during the Euro-Maidan Revolution when Taras Shevchenko’s poems were recited over loudspeakers, and poets joined in the protests in full force. While the war in eastern Ukraine continues to impact families across the nation as they grapple with grief, trauma, depression, and displacement, many contemporary poets highlight and ponder current realities, the nation’s past, and what lies ahead.

This project is both compelling and critical because it exposes English-language audiences to contemporary Ukrainian poetry—an underrepresented voice in contemporary world literature. Additionally, the series contributes to the preservation and promotion of Ukrainian language in its highest artistic form, highlighting a language and culture that has been threatened, both historically and contemporarily, by imperialist expansion and hegemony. The Lost Horse Press Contemporary Ukrainian Poetry Series includes a diversity of gender and regional origin among its featured poets, as well as work by both emerging and established poets and translators.

Lost Horse Press is an independent poetry press, based in Liberty Lake, Washington, whose publications are distributed by Washington State University Press. Lost Horse Press’ books are distributed world-wide.
