Multitasking is multi programming with round robin where every process can progress parallel in their allocated time quantum. There is forceful preemption to process as like traffic signal.

Multi programming operating system can executes multiple program that is advantage over spooling but actually at a time one CPU can execute one program only. Remaining thing regarding to execution of multiple program is carried out by context switching. Here is less waiting time for the processes.

Earlier Spooling was uni programming, direct interaction of I/O with the CPU is removed here. In spooling there is separation in memory like primary and secondary memory. I/O devices interacting with secondary memory. but still CPU remains idle when process is in waiting state.

Primary goal of operating system is to provide convenience and secondary goal of operating system is to provide efficiency.

Basically operating system is working as a resource manager as well as for the resource allocation also.

Functions of Operating Systems are like, User interface, Resource management, Process Management, Memory Management, Input Output Management, File Management, Security Management and many more.

Operating system is structured in monolithic and micro kernel structure as well as in layered architecture also. Now a days virtual machines are also used in operating systems.
