Say the sound /ʌ/. Is that sound a long sound (does your voice
continue to hold that sound for some time) or is it a short sound
(does your voice say the sound quickly)?

It is a short sound. When
you say the /ʌ/ sound, your mouth is open and your jaw drops.
Your tongue is down and the tip of your tongue is lightly touching
the back of your bottom teeth. Your lips are more relaxed than a
spread (pulled back) position.

If you compare the /æ/ sound with
the /ʌ/ sound, you will see that there are some differences. When
you say the /æ/ sound, your lips are more spread than the /ʌ/
sound ‒ when you say /ʌ/ your lips are more relaxed. Your tongue
is also a little different.

When you say /æ/, the tip of your tongue
touches the back of your bottom teeth and when you say /ʌ/ your
tongue moves back a little ‒ the tip your tongue still touches the
back of your bottom teeth, but only slightly (a little). Your jaw
drops for both sounds.

Look at the phonemic chart and identify the
six short (monophthong) sounds that we have learned in the video
lessons. The short sounds are:
/ɪ/; /ʊ/; /e/; /Ə/; /æ/; /ʌ/.
