(AP) NEW YORK — In the midst of a misbehavior investigation that resulted in the previous president's dismissal, Latin American nations chose Brazilian economist Ilan Goldfajn to run the largest development bank in the area on Sunday.

Out of a field of five candidates put forth by Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Mexico, and Trinidad & Tobago, governors from the Inter-American Development Bank's 48 members chose Goldfajn to head the Washington-based multilateral lender.

It comes after the September dismissal of Mauricio Claver-Carone, the bank's first American president in the institution's 63-year history. He was fired after an ethics investigation revealed that he was probably having an intimate relationship with a subordinate. He refuted the charge.The job of the new president will be to support economies that were affected by the coronavirus pandemic and are currently experiencing weaker currencies, mounting foreign debt, and capital flight sparked by inflation and rising interest rates in the U.S. and Europe.


The IMF cut its prediction for regional growth this month, dropping it from a July estimate of 2% to 1.7% for 2023.


The appointment of a fellow Latin American to the position of bank president, according to Gaspard Estrada, director of Sciences Po's Political Observatory of Latin America and the Caribbean, should lessen the division that surrounded Claver-Carone's election and facilitate the task of securing additional funding.
