In this video, the band for King & Country from Curb Records shares what their hit song “God Only Knows” means to them—and how it can encourage you today.

It’s okay if you’re feeling ashamed about something. Guilt, shame, regret are all common feelings. As Luke Smallbone says, “’God Only Knows’ deals with the fact that I don’t know any human that doesn’t deal with some sort of shame.”

In fact, the lyrics to “God Only Knows” show us that the song is “for the lonely, for the ashamed, the misunderstood, and the ones to blame.”

But it’s how we deal with shame that matters. God calls us to share our shame with Him. Because it’s true that, as the lyrics say, “God only knows what you've been through.” He fully understands our pain. We don’t have to try to explain it to Him the way we might try to explain it to a friend. He sees our minds, every scattered thought we have, every word we say. As Joel Smallbone puts it, “God sees us, and loves us, and chooses us.”

And that realization should bring us comfort. Luke continues, “It’s a very freeing thing for God to know the things, the mistakes, the challenges, the personality traits that I have, and yet He still says, ‘... when I look at you, I love you. I made you for a purpose....’”

The lyrics of “God Only Knows” remind us of something important: “God only knows what you've been through. God only knows what they say about you. God only knows how it’s killing you.” Because of how deeply He knows us, He loves us in the deepest possible way.

We might think we know how it feels to be loved. But “there’s a kind of love that God only knows,” as the song tells us. And He shares that love with us so that we can begin to wrestle with our shame, be better people, and love God better.

This special love, this special knowledge that God has began before we were born and continues to this day. Psalm 139:13 reads, “For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb.” No one else knows us as fully as God does.

If you’re struggling today, remember these lyrics: “God only knows where to find you. God only knows how to break through. God only knows the real you. There’s a kind of love that God only knows.”
